Aaron and Si-Han
Si-Han and I were eyeing craigslist for an armoire to fill a void in our apartment's furnishings. She finally found one being given away by a law firm in a high-rise in the financial district. I grabbed a pickup truck from City CarShare and headed over there. As there is essentially no legal parking near this law firm on a weekday afternoon, it turned out to be a bit of an adventure. I'm never going to live down how we dropped this heavy armoire on her foot at one point. But with the help of some law firm staffer, we got the giant armoire down to the ground floor and loaded in the truck. Minutes later we were home with a fine piece of furniture added to our apartment, thanks to City CarShare. However, I won't be trying to pick anything up from the financial district at 5 PM again.
Ayse, Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger
I use our business membership for Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger to drive to construction sites from our office in downtown SF about 3 times a week. One afternoon, I got stuck in epic bad traffic—the new iPhone app saved the day. I was able to extend my time from the app in seconds (while we were at a standstill on the 101). Normally that would have involved me digging out my headset and membership card, and a lot more time with my attention not on the road. Instead, three taps while stopped and I was good for the next hour (which I used every minute of). Big win for the new app—sure love this convenient timesaver!
Beca, Sol Catering
Our business, Sol Catering, is built around organic and locally sourced ingredients. We rely on City CarShare to get us (and the food) to our events. Sometimes we also do big catering jobs—for hundreds of guests, like weddings. Their larger cars like the Honda Element really come in handy for those type of events. We’ve also had clients tell us they thought our ‘green ride is cool’. We like that. City CarShare definitely helps us deliver the “farm to table” experience to our clients.
Bridget and Jessica
Mini Cooper and Scion xB
I used the Mini Cooper to show out-of-towners around and the Scion xB for Trash Mash-Up, which is the community program my sister and I founded. We hold art workshops for kids to create costumes out of materials that would have gone to the landfill. Then we all dress up in the costumes and dance in parades. I am a City CarShare member so I can save money and the environment. I think everyone should join. It’s so affordable and easy. It is a great way to do all the things you would if you owned a car but without all of the drama of owning one.
EV Nissan Leaf
One sad day, a friend called me. Elsa had been burned out of her house and was desperately seeking someone with a truck to help move her most precious items. She knew I belonged to City CarShare and wondered if I might have access to one. I promptly showed up in one of our Tacoma pickups and helped Elsa move her stuff to safety. Having access to the exact vehicle you need can be very important.
City CarShare is so awesome!! It's total freedom to not be tied to car payments and/or car maintenance, but to still have complete access to a vehicle whenever I need it for as long or as short as I need it. I LOVE you guys and gals! I also love that City CarShare is a nonprofit based in the Bay Area; by using it, I can give back to my fabulous community. And it's the perfect fit for me. I practice sustainability and collaboration in almost everything that I do. I'm very community oriented and the concept of carsharing embodies all of this.
I take Muni to work, and I prefer to walk as much as possible (shoes permitting). But my City CarShare membership comes in handy when visitors come to town. My mom came to visit from the East Coast three days after buying a bright red Hummer. I picked her up from the airport in a Prius and we spent the afternoon running errands. In between stops, I bragged about the quiet engine and the fuel efficiency. I made a big to-do about having a parking space so close to home. Though my mom did not return her hummer, she was very impressed with the service. City CarShare works perfectly with my lifestyle.
I mainly use City CarShare cars as a convenient way to travel to and from my work on the weekends. It’s affordable and convenient, which is important for someone like me without a car, and the customer service experience offered is the most comprehensive experience I’ve had with any carsharing services. I usually take public transportation on the weekdays and I’m a heavy user of BART to get in and out of the city. After doing extensive research, City CarShare offered the best bang for my buck when it came to all day trips. Their philosophy of “paying only what you use” made them an attractive alternative to other car sharing services.
I’m on City CarShare’s CommunityShare plan. It’s a special program that offers subsidized membership and driving costs to low/moderate-income earners who are referred by organizations that partner with City CarShare (in my case, through the Glide Economic Development Corporation). This program has enabled me to have access cars at an affordable price when I have to pick up things that I can’t carry on the Muni. But my membership is more than that—I’m an aviation lover so sometimes I’ll drive and park next to the airport and watch the planes take off and land.
Karen, Stella and Dot
The City CarShare mission really resonates with me; I was even a part of the team for a while. Having a membership is a must-have for a busy mom who is eco-conscious. We're a one-car household and my membership is great in a pinch when I need a car to take me and my daughter anywhere (even in case of an emergency). I also use it for my Stella & Dot business, when I need to go to meetings or trunk shows. Mostly, I love that I can set a green example for my daughter and reduce our carbon footprint.
Kelly, CA Academy of Sciences
Toyota Scion xD
Just like City CarShare, the California Academy of Sciences is a mission-based nonprofit and we strive to make information accessible for those who can’t physically visit the museum. So we use our business membership to carry boxes of rare and old scientific literature to be scanned at Internet Archive and made available for free online at the Biodiversity Heritage Library website. It’s quite a process but we’re proud our catalog continues to grow!
Kyle, Berkeley Repertory Theatre
We’re happy to be a regular Member Perks partner to City CarShare. Our mission and their missions fall so closely in line with one another. We’re both local nonprofits who endeavor to provide their surrounding community with high quality products and experiences–all while staying green! Plus, as an organization that prides itself on supporting local artisans and employees, we’re thrilled to partner with another Bay Area nonprofit that gives so much back to its community.
Lauren, Berkeley Repertory Theatre
Our business membership for Berkeley Repertory Theatre helped us tremendously last January. We consolidated the majority of our administrative and production operations into a large warehouse, shop, and office space in West Berkeley. City CarShare has been a huge help in helping staff to conquer the issue of not being in two places at once. So even though we’re now 3 miles away from our Theatre, we’re enjoying the astonishing synergy of having various departments under one roof – thanks to City CarShare.
Thanks to City CarShare, I can really spread my artistic wings! A trip to the art supply store for my large canvasses and buckets of paint used to mean cramped hands, a stiffened back, guaranteed dirty looks from fellow train or bus passengers fighting for space, and considerably less energy for painting. With City Car Share, I can get as much paint and as many big canvasses as I need without channeling my inner contortionist and body builder!
I use City CarShare for local errands every now and then and to take short trips to Reno and Santa Cruz. When accounting for gas it was comparable or cheaper to use City CarShare than rent a car. Once you add in my loyalty and positive experience with City CarShare it was a no brainer. I like being a member because it means being a part of an organization that is working to make the Bay Area a better place to live. By using car sharing rather than owning a car, I get to be a part of reducing the number of vehicles and the amount of emissions in the area. It means being part of a diverse community of like-minded people.

I love using my City CarShare membership for both work and fun. Like going shopping for my Bible Study group, or having a blast with my daughter gardening, cooking, and listening to classical music (the SF Symphony is my favorite local band!). The City CarShare staff I’ve met are super nice, and I like that they put community first.
Shannon and Fam
We love Oakland and wanted to live somewhere that supported car-free living. We primarily use City CarShare to go hiking up in the hills, and haul things that don’t fit in our XtraCycle or bike trailer. We also brought our daughter home from the hospital! There’s a City CarShare Pod in the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center garage so it was super convenient to install her car seat. Another time we took City CarShare to Henry Coe State Park for a backpacking trip. Sadly, we had to cut out early because it was colder than we anticipated – but it was so convenient to start and end the reservation when we wanted to, rather than open hours of a car rental place.
